What patients can expect

We will communicate with you regarding our assessment findings, treatment plan, and communicate any concerns that may require further tests or medical management.

Patients will be provided with a comprehensive assessment, an individualized exercise program, psychoeducation, and individualized for returning to meaningful functional activities.

Our physiotherapists are experienced in working collaboratively with physicians, mental health professionals, and allied health clinicians.

MSK and post-surgical patients can expect a functional assessment of mobility, with an individualized plan to return to baseline function. Active rehabilitation is encouraged, along with early mobilization to improve functional outcomes within post-op or condition-specific restrictions. Patients are provided with post-discharge self-management plans and encouraged to meet the condition and age-specific movement guidelines .

For complex neuro and vestibular patients, our comprehensive assessment includes oculomotor and vestibulo-ocular evaluation, cerebellar exam, complete balance and gait exam including force plate, COP testing, and other neurological and musculoskeletal assessments as indicated. Individual rehabilitation includes functionally active neurological rehabilitation to improve overall mobility, strength, and return to baseline.

Research

Vestibular rehabilitation for unilateral peripheral vestibular dysfunction. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

“There is moderate to strong evidence that vestibular rehabilitation is a safe, effective management for unilateral peripheral vestibular dysfunction, based on a number of high‐quality randomised controlled trials.”

Vestibular Rehabilitation for Peripheral Vestibular Hypofunction: An Updated Clinical Practice Guideline

Based on strong evidence, clinicians should offer vestibular rehabilitation to adults with unilateral and bilateral vestibular hypofunction who present with impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions related to the vestibular deficit.

Conditions that benefit most

  1. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)- including canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis
  2. Unilateral vestibular loss/hypofunction:
    1. Vestibular neuritis
    2. Labyrinthitis
    3. Ramsay Hunt
    4. Post-surgical
    5. Vestibular schwannoma/acoustic neuroma
    6. High velocity vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) loss
    7. Other related conditions
  3. Bilateral vestibular loss/hypofunction:
    1. Ototoxicity
    2. Idiopathic Presbyvestibulopathy
    3. High velocity VOR loss
    4.  Dizziness and imbalance after concussion/mild traumatic brain injury
    5. Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
    6. Cerebellar Atrophy with Bilateral Vestibulopathy (CABV)
  4. Fluctuating vestibular conditions can benefit from vestibular rehabilitation if they have developed a unilateral or bilateral vestibular loss, if they are imbalanced between their attacks, if they would benefit from psychoeducation, or if they would benefit from support to maintain their physical activities, for example:
    1. Meniere’s Disease
    2. Recurrent Vestibulopathy
    3. Vestibular Migraine
